The Kalam Cosmological Argument

September 27, 2013 by mattperman

This is a great video summarizing the Kalam cosmological argument, which shows how science helps demonstrate that it is fully rational to believe in the existence of God.

The Kalam cosmological argument was initially developed in the middle ages, but it has been updated and refined in an incredibly insightful way in recent years by William Lange Craig, perhaps the best Christian apologist of our day. (I highly recommend his book Reasonable Faith: Christian Truth and Apologetics.)

Briefly, the argument is this:

  1. Whatever begins to exist has a cause
  2. The universe began to exist
  3. Therefore, the universe has a cause

The chief contribution Craig has made in updating the argument is in showing how scientific discoveries of the last 100 years, from the theory of relativity to the realization that the universe is expanding, decisively demonstrate that the universe is not eternal, but does in fact have a beginning. And if it had a beginning, where did it come from? As the video shows, the best explanation is a Creator — that is, God.

And for some very enjoyable, short apologetics videos answering tough and interesting questions about evidence for the faith, check out Dr. Craig’s Youtube Channel drcraigvideos.
